CULTURE

IMPROVING LANGUAGE SKILLS

At SV School of Dance, language becomes a bridge between movement and meaning. Students do not simply dance to music they memorize; they learn the Sanskrit shlokas connected to the art form and understand what they are saying and why they matter. Choreography is taught in the languages students hear at home, including Tamil, Punjabi, Telugu, Marathi, and Hindi, so lyrics feel familiar and personal. Teachers also give instruction in the student’s mother tongue whenever possible, helping young dancers feel understood, confident, and culturally connected as they learn.

HISTORY OF THE DANCE FORM

Students at SV School of Dance learn the historical and cultural foundations of each dance form, not just the movements. Classes include discussions on the origins of styles such as Bharatanatyam and Kathak, where they come from, and how they evolved over time. Students are also introduced to the mythology that shapes Indian dance, including stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, helping them understand the characters, emotions, and symbolism they express through movement.

CONNECTING STUDENTS TO THEIR ROOTS

Beyond technique, SV School of Dance focuses on building a strong connection to culture and tradition. Students participate in a Saraswati Puja conducted in the traditional way, similar to what is practiced in India, reinforcing respect for learning, art, and the teacher. Each movement is taught with its proper name and purpose, including detailed explanations of hand gestures and footwork, so students understand what they are expressing. Songs are translated and explained in context, helping students see their relevance today. Every class ends with a namaskar, reinforcing gratitude, discipline, and respect for the art form.
